What Makes Steel Different?

The first known use of iron was some 6,000 years ago. A few thousand years later, the ultra-common element would be applied in its most important role: the production of steelwork contractors. Steel is used in many products and applications, including mechanical, electrical and construction uses. It comes in many forms, making it difficult to choose the right one for your application.

Carbon steel

Carbon steel, a soft, malleable metal made of iron and carbon, contains only 2% carbon by weight. It is strong and durable because it doesn’t contain other elements in its makeup.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is an alloy of chromium, which gives the material a distinctive luster. This particular type of steel is commonly used in the manufacture of medical equipment and appliances, but its range of uses is far greater than just gas ranges in kitchens.

Alloy Steel

Steel is an alloy, which is a combination of iron and another material. Steel can be plain (iron) or include other elements, such as carbon and chromium.

Tool Steels

Tool steels are used in manufacturing machinery. Tempering them, a process of adding high heat and then cooling quickly, makes these steels extremely hard and resistant to heat. They’re usually used in high-impact environments and can become very abrasive over time.
